Q: What is a pet microchip?

A: The microchips we use are tiny computer chips which have an identification number programmed onto them. The microchip is encapsulated in a biocompatible material that does not cause a reaction from the body. The chip is so tiny that it fits through a hypodermic needle and can be simply injected under the skin of your pet. This provides a permanent and positive identification that cannot fade or fall off. This serves as a safe, simple and inexpensive way to protect your pet against loss or theft.

Q: How does the microchip work?

A: Each microchip has a unique number. No two animals will ever have the same number. A radio signal is used to read this number through the skin or your pet. In addition, the microchip generates a reliability check to guarantee that your identifying number is read accurately. This all takes place in less than half a second!

Q: How long does the microchip last?

A: The microchip has no power supply to replace or moving parts to wear down. Therefore it can be expected to last for decades.

Q: Does the pet have to be sedated for the injection?

A: No, the injection creates only a slight discomfort. Most pets don't even react to it.

Q: My pet never leaves my yard so why should I have them chipped?

A: It only takes one time for the mailcarrier, gardener or a friend to leave the gate open or door ajar. Pets are lost every day and pet theft also occurs.

Q: What is PETrac?

A: PETrac is a 24 hour global recovery network that has saved thousands of pets identified with the AVID microchip. It's computerized database maintains the information you provide to recover your pet. When you become a member, PETrac can reunite your pet directly with you.

Q: What does it cost to become a member of PETrac?

A: You pay a one time fee of $15.00 for a single pet or $40.00 for multiple pets (up to 8). There are no annual fees. There is a $6.00 charge for information changes about your membership, such as your address.
